Product detailed description
Warhammer Pro Tone Dry Brush Extra Small
Warhammer Pro Tone Dry Brush Extra Small is a small modelling brush for precisely highlighting fine textures using the drybrushing technique. It helps bring out details on fur, armour and bases without the time-consuming process of painting every individual edge.
About the product
Fine textures on miniatures can be challenging to paint. With a traditional pointed brush, you often need to highlight individual edges separately, while a large drybrush can easily catch surrounding areas. Warhammer Pro Tone Dry Brush Extra Small offers a more practical solution for selectively working on raised details.
The drybrushing technique uses a very small amount of paint, which catches primarily on raised areas when the brush is lightly passed over the surface. The result is a more clearly defined texture and stronger contrast between lighter details and darker recesses.
The extra small size is particularly useful for highlighting fur, stone decorations, chainmail or textured bases. You’ll especially appreciate it when the surrounding parts of your miniature are already painted and you want to avoid accidentally painting over them.
A Games Workshop modelling brush from the Warhammer Pro Tone range, in Extra Small size. It belongs to a range of specialised tools for drybrushing and selectively highlighting textured surfaces on Warhammer miniatures.
Properties
- Extra small size allows more precise drybrushing of fine textures and better control over paint placement.
- Helps highlight raised edges and textures while recesses can remain darker, preserving the depth of details.
- Allows gradual layering of subtle highlights without laboriously picking out every individual edge with a traditional brush.
Extra small size for working in confined areas, specifically designed for drybrushing and gradually highlighting raised details. Helps apply paint to selected areas without having to carefully pick out individual edges with a pointed brush.
Tips and tricks
| Product type | Quick overview |
|---|---|
| Use | Highlighting small raised details on miniatures using the drybrushing technique. Particularly suitable for smaller areas, textured equipment, fur, stone details and other intricate surfaces where you need precise control over paint application. |
| Specific application | Highlighting fur on a cloak, the texture of a stone base, raised sections of chainmail or small textures on miniature equipment. Thanks to its small size, you can work on specific areas while more easily avoiding surrounding surfaces that you want to keep darker. |
| Method and technique | Fur and hair | Gently highlighting raised strands | More defined texture without painting every individual hair. Chainmail | Lightly brushing across raised links | Highlighted metallic surface with darker recesses. Stone bases | Gradually lightening edges and uneven surfaces | More pronounced stone texture and more natural depth. Small decorations | Selectively highlighting raised decorative details | Better definition of ornaments without extensively repainting surrounding areas. Textured equipment | Gently highlighting intricate surfaces | More visible details and stronger contrast. Small terrain elements | Highlighting small stones and raised textures | Faster finishing of intricate surfaces. |
| Advantages | More precise work on small areas compared to a large drybrush. Faster highlighting of intricate details compared to manually picking out individual edges. Ability to gradually build up highlights without immediately covering the base colour. Better control over which parts of the miniature receive a lighter shade. Easier creation of contrast between raised details and darker recesses. Practical for painting miniatures, bases and small terrain elements. |
| What to watch for | The extra small size is not practical for quickly highlighting large surfaces, such as extensive terrain or large models. A traditional pointed brush is more suitable for painting eyes, thin lines and sharp details. Too much paint can cause unwanted streaks and cover darker recesses. Excessive pressure while painting can push paint into areas that should remain darker. The technique requires a little practice to master the correct amount of paint and light brush pressure. |
| Combination | Citadel Base and Layer paints, a suitable drybrushing palette and a larger brush for more extensive surfaces. |
| Practical tip | Wipe off almost all the paint before painting and test the brush on an inconspicuous area of the miniature. |
How to use
1. Choose a paint shade lighter than the base colour of the area you want to highlight. 2. Pick up a small amount of paint with the brush. There is no need to dip all the bristles into the paint. 3. Wipe most of the paint off onto a paper towel or a suitable drybrushing palette. Only a minimal amount of pigment should remain on the brush. 4. First, test a few light strokes on an inconspicuous area or a test surface. 5. Gently brush across the raised details. Avoid pressing too hard so the paint does not unnecessarily reach the recesses. 6. For stronger highlights, repeat the process in several thin layers. Build up the paint gradually, as an excessively heavy first application is difficult to correct. 7. After finishing, thoroughly clean the brush with a suitable cleaning product and lukewarm water. Do not allow paint to dry in the bristles. Practical tip: If the brush leaves noticeable light streaks instead of subtle highlights, there is probably too much paint left on it.
Materials and surfaces
Designed for use with suitable acrylic modelling paints, such as Citadel Base and Layer. The brush can be used on painted plastic, resin and metal miniatures. The exact composition of the bristles, handle and ferrule has not been confirmed.
The extra small working size allows you to focus drybrushing on fine details that a larger brush could easily overlap. With the correct amount of paint, it helps preserve darker recesses while highlighting the raised texture of the surface.
