Cracked Ground
Cracked Earth – realistic dry and scorched terrain effects
Cracked earth textures allow you to create realistic surfaces of dried soil, clay, mud, desert terrain and sun-scorched landscapes. They are ideal for miniature bases, dioramas, model scenery and larger gaming terrain.
As they dry, they form a characteristic irregular cracked structure that makes it easy to recreate dry ground, dried riverbeds, cracked mud or barren wastelands. The finished surface can be further combined with pigments, paints, stones, sand, vegetation and other terrain materials.

Create the appearance of sun-dried soil with irregular cracks and separated sections of earth. Ideal for steppes, wastelands, dried fields and post-apocalyptic gaming environments.
Recreate drying muddy surfaces around roads, vehicle tracks, puddles, rivers or swamps. Cracked areas can be combined with wet effects to create a natural transition between dry and damp terrain.
Cracked textures are ideal for desert bases, scorched battlefields and fantasy or sci-fi worlds with extremely dry environments.
A cracked earth effect can quickly create a striking foundation for a miniature. Finer textures work well on smaller bases, while larger cracks stand out on bigger models and scenic bases.
On larger surfaces, cracked earth can represent dried riverbeds, roads, open landscapes or sections of a battlefield. Combine it with rocks, sand, rubble and vegetation for a more natural appearance.
Once dry, the surface can be further painted and enhanced with washes, pigments and dust, or complemented with rocks, grass tufts and other natural scenic elements.
Apply the texture to a prepared surface and spread it according to the desired result. With crackle textures, the amount of material applied usually affects the final structure – a thicker layer can create larger fragments and deeper cracks, while a thinner application is suitable for a more subtle effect. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly and avoid disturbing it while the cracks are forming. Once dry, you can enhance the scene with pigments, paints, sand, stones, rubble or vegetation and blend the cracked areas naturally into the surrounding terrain.
