How to choose the right Citadel brush
Citadel brushes are divided by purpose, making it easy to choose the right type for base colours, fine details, shading, Contrast paints, drybrushing and edge highlighting on Warhammer miniatures.
You do not need to buy every type at once. A few essential brushes are usually enough to get started, and you can add more later depending on the techniques you use most often.
Brushes for applying base colours to armour, fabric, skin and other larger areas of a miniature.
More precise brushes for layering colours, painting smaller areas, edge highlighting and other detailed work.
Fine brushes with a precise tip for eyes, faces, symbols, small decorations and other tiny details.
Brushes with a higher paint capacity for applying fluid Shade paints into recesses and around details.
Brushes suited to controlled application of Contrast paints, where good paint capacity and smooth brush strokes are important.
Firmer brushes designed for drybrushing and quickly highlighting textures, fur, stone, terrain and pronounced edges.
For your first miniatures, one medium Base brush, a smaller Layer or Detail brush, a separate Shade or Contrast brush and one Dry brush will usually be enough. More specialised sizes can be added later.
Do not leave brushes standing tip-down in water, do not allow paint to dry in the bristles and try to keep pigment away from the metal ferrule. Clean the brush thoroughly after painting and reshape the tip to its original form.
