Oil Washes – Shadows, Depth and Weathering for Miniatures
AK Interactive oil washes are designed for quickly enhancing details, deepening shadows and creating weathering effects on miniatures and models. Their thin consistency allows the wash to flow naturally into recesses, panel lines, joints and around raised details, creating greater depth and contrast.
In addition to versatile dark and brown shades, you can also choose from blue, green, violet, yellow and rust washes depending on the base colour of the model and the desired effect. The range also includes products for rust, oil and wet surface effects, as well as thinners that make it easier to spread, soften and clean up excess effects.
Black Wash, Dark Wash and Brown Wash are ideal for quickly enhancing recesses, joints and other details. Black and dark shades create stronger contrast, while brown produces a more natural appearance on warm, earthy and weathered surfaces.
Deep Blue, Blue Grey, Green, Greyish Green, Violet or Yellow Wash allow you to deepen the model's base colour without relying on universal black. They are ideal for coloured armour, fabrics, fantasy and sci-fi miniatures, as well as other vibrant surfaces.
Light Rust, Dark Rust and Extreme Rust Wash provide several shades for creating corrosion effects. By combining light, dark and more intense rusty tones, you can achieve a more natural aged-metal effect than by using a single colour.
Engine Oil is ideal for creating oil stains and operational grime, Rust Streaks for rusty streaks, and Wet Effects Fluid for the appearance of wet surfaces, puddles or running water. These products are ideal for adding finishing weathering effects to your model.
Odorless Thinner is used for thinning and controlling oil-based products. With a clean brush lightly moistened with thinner, you can spread or soften the wash, blend transitions or remove excess effect from areas where you do not want it.
White Spirit is suitable for spreading, wiping and thinning oil and enamel products, as well as for cleaning brushes. Compared with Odorless Thinner, it is more aggressive, so use it carefully and test the technique before applying it to a finished model.
A wash does not always have to be black. For a more natural result, choose the shade according to the model's base colour – Brown Wash works well with warm and earthy tones, blue or green washes can deepen similarly coloured surfaces, while rust shades are ideal for aged metal surfaces. Apply the wash mainly into recesses and around details and allow it some time to work. You can then remove or spread any excess with a clean brush lightly moistened with a suitable thinner. Thanks to the longer working time, you have more time to adjust the effect than with fast-drying acrylic washes.
