Fanatic Washes
Fanatic Washes – Quick Shading and Enhanced Details
Fanatic Washes are acrylic washes from The Army Painter designed to quickly create shadows, depth, and more pronounced definition on miniatures. Their thin consistency allows the paint to flow naturally into recesses, around folds, joints, and other details, while raised areas remain lighter.
The wide range of shades allows you to match the shading to the model's base colour. Alongside versatile dark and brown tones, you can use coloured washes for red, blue, green, or purple areas, special shades for skin, and additional tones for specific materials and effects.

Dark Tone, Strong Tone, Soft Tone, and Light Tone are versatile shades for quickly creating shadows. By choosing a lighter or darker wash, you can adjust the intensity of the result to suit the miniature's base colour.
Sepia Tone, Rust Tone, and other warmer shades are ideal for bones, leather, fabrics, earthy surfaces, aged materials, and areas where a pure black shadow would appear too harsh.
Red Tone, Dark Red Tone, Orange Tone, Purple Tone, and Magenta Tone help preserve the character of the base colour while deepening its shadows. They are ideal for fabrics, armour, monster skin, and fantasy details.
Blue Tone, Dark Blue Tone, and Green Tone are ideal for coloured armour, clothing, skin, magical elements, and other surfaces where you want to create shadows without using neutral black or brown.
Strong Skin Shade and Dark Skin Shade are designed for shading skin tones and similar warm colours. Military Shade is particularly suitable for muted greens, military colours, and natural tones.
Fanatic Wash Medium allows you to thin your wash while maintaining its properties and colour. Use it when you want softer shading, gradual layering, or greater control over the intensity of the final effect.
A wash does not always have to be black. For a more natural result, choose a shade that complements the model's base colour – brown and sepia tones work well over warm and earthy colours, coloured washes deepen similar base shades, while Dark Tone or Strong Tone are ideal when you want a stronger, more universal shadow. Apply the wash into details and recesses and avoid allowing it to pool excessively on large flat surfaces. If the resulting shadow is too strong, use Fanatic Wash Medium and gradually build up the intensity with several lighter layers.
